Keegan to add one more to United squad before opener

Galway United 2

Athlone Town 1

A late own goal from former Galway United defender Cormac Raftery ensured the Tribesmen earned another pre-season win at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday evening.

Kevin Devaney and Jason Lyons, one of five Galway natives in the Athlone squad, traded first half goals, but Shane Keegan's team eventually prevailed.

United boss Keegan felt the display wasn't as good as what was delivered during the success over Sligo Rovers.

"It was a useful workout in terms of game time and all of that, it was another win, it is great to have two wins, but we weren't at the races for whatever reason," Keegan reflected.

"It was nowhere near as satisfying a performance as last week, but you'll have an off night so I suppose it is a good sign to win when you do."

When asked about whether he will add to his squad ahead of the February 24 SSE Airtricity League Premier Division opener against Drogheda United, Keegan replied: "I would say if anything one, but if not I'm happy enough.

"Anything we add would be the icing on the cake, but I am quite happy with what I have got.

"If we could get one more in who we thought had the right mentality, in the right position, who wasn't going to cost us an arm and a leg we might be able to get one more over the line.

"At the same time I wouldn't think we are short if we don't get anybody in."

United continue their pre-season schedule with two matches next week against the Irish Colleges International side on Monday at the AUL complex and Waterford United on Wednesday at the RSC.
