Fitzgibbon Cup comes to NUIGalway

NUI Galway will host this year's Fitzgibbon Cup senior hurling championship finals, with the decider in Pearse Stadium on February 25.

The semi-finals will be held in Dangan, along with the semi-finals of the Ryan Cup and the Fergal Maher Cups.

The event will be preceded by the annual Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup dinner on Friday February 24 in the Westwood Hotel, where the late Joe McDonagh’s association with Gaelic games at the university will be celebrated on a night I gCuimhne ar Joe.

Joe, who played for both UCG football and hurling teams, won a Fresher’s hurling medal in 1972 and featured in several Sigerson and Fitzgibbon campaigns. However it was as a postgraduate student in 1977 when he won his Fitzgibbon Cup medal, having beaten Maynooth in the final, 1-14, 1-12.

NUI Galway last hosted the competition in 2010. Mary Immaculate College hurlers are the holders, while Trinity College Dublin are the Ryan Cup holders, and IT Sligo, the Fergal Maher Cup.

In their first match in Group B, NUI Galway recorded a 4-14 to 1-12 victory over DCU and take on University of Limerick in Limerick today. Their final group game is against Cork Institute of Technology on Tuesday February 7.
