Public meeting to call for legalisation of medicinal cannabis

Speakers to argue in favour of allowing cannabis to be used for medical purposes

In the aftermath of a Bill legalising cannabis for medicinal purposes passing its first stage in Dáil Éireann, a public meeting to discuss medicinal cannabis will take place in Galway this week.

The Bill was put forward by People Before Profit Dublin Mid-West TD Gino Kenny, who will also be key speaker at the meeting, entitled Legalise Medicinal Cannabis, in The Western Hotel, Prospect Hill, on Thursday January 26 at 8pm.

Also speaking at the meeting will be Tom Curran, whose wife Marie died of MS four years ago. Mr Curran will explain how she was using cannabis for pain relief in the last few years of her life. Local man Mark Gaynor will also speak about his son's use of medicinal cannabis.

"The impact of the Bill being put forward has been huge as it could benefit so many people," said People Before Profit Galway representative, Joe Loughnane. "If enacted, the Bill will give them the option of availing of medicinal cannabis in some form to relieve their suffering. Vera Twomey from Cork has a daughter, Ava, with Dravet Syndrome. She has received much media attention for her call on the Government to legalise cannabis for medicinal purposes."

All are welcome to attend the meeting, which will argue in favour of legalising cannabis for medical purposes.
