Jazz, avant garde, and improvisation

Pianist Izumi Kimura and percussionist Gerry Hemingway in concert

THE PIANIST Izumi Kimura will be joined by the percussionist Gerry Hemingway for a concert of jazz, avant garde, and improvisational music entitled 'Thought Bubbles'.

The show takes place in The Mick Lally Theatre, Druid Lane, this Saturday at 8pm. It will be the first in a series of 'stand alone' concerts the Galway Jazz Festival hopes to present throughout the year, in addition to the annual festival in October.

A highlight of last year's jazz festival, Kimura held her audience spellbound for a performance of the ‘Sonatas and Interludes For Prepared Piano’ by John Cage, as well as with her performance with guitarist Joe O’Callaghan.

Born in the USA, but now based in Switzerland, Gerry Hemingway has been at the forefront of jazz and creative music for more than 40 years. As a member of faculty at the Hochschule Luzerne he teaches drumming, improvisation, composition, songwriting, multimedia, and history as well as running workshops. It was at one of these workshops that Izumi and Gerry met and from there created a collaborative project.

Tickets are €10 from Druid (091 - 568660, www.druid.ie ).
