Galwegians interested in volunteering are encouraged to attend the annual Galway City Volunteer Recruitment Fair, which is being described as an "opportunity for the public to find out what is happening in their community and see how they can get involved".
More than 30 charities and community organisations from across the city will be at the fair, which takes place in the Clybaun Hotel, Knocknacarra, on Sunday January 29 from 2pm to 5pm. It is being organised by Volunteer Galway, and last year's event saw more than 1,000 people attend the event to speak to organisations about the work that they do and the volunteer roles they are trying to fill.
"There will be a wide variety of volunteer roles available to suit people’s own busy schedules," said Donncha Foley, development manager of Volunteer Galway. "We would encourage people to come along and speak to the charities, find out about the great work that they are doing and how you can get involved." Labour city councillor, Niall McNelis, a leading organiser of the event said volunteering was "a great way to learn new skills and make new friends", while also contributing to the "valuable work" charities do throughout the year.
Since 2006 Volunteer Galway has been supporting members of the public to find suitable volunteer roles in Galway city and county through selecting roles on its list of volunteer opportunities. In the last 10 years, more than 11,000 members of the public have used the service, and more than 2,500 roles for some 500 Galway based organisations have been advertised.
