Moycullen Basketball prepare for hectic festive fare

SSE Airtricity Moycullen will seek more Christmas cheer on Saturday when they travel to Dublin for their Superleague basketball clash with UCD Marian at UCD (7pm ).

Currently third in the league, Marion are a formidable outfit, but Moycullen will travel in confidence after a dominant 91-66 victory over Radisson BLU UL Eagles last weekend.

It is the start of a hectic festive period for the club which continues on New Year's Eve with a home game in the Kingfisher where they entertain Kubs at 3pm, followed by National Cup semi-finals in Cork.

Last weekend Moyullen found their groove against UL Eagles in the Jes - the first quarter one of their best of the season. They found scores through Phil Lawrence-Ricks, Patrick Lyons, James Loughnane, Kyle and Dylan Cunningham and Connor Curran as they looked to push the fast break at every opportunity. UL had no response as Moycullen had amassed a 31-7 lead, their largest first quarter leading margin of the season.

Coach John Cunningham used the bench and, although it took almost five minutes for Moycullen to find their first second-quarter score, Joseph Tummon, John Hackett and Lawrence-Ricks settled the team’s nerves. UL managed to put together an 8-0 run near the end, but Dylan Cunningham and Patrick Lyons finished the half with a flourish.

The pattern continued in the third with Paul Freeman, Hackett and Tummon dominating, and although Eagles tried to pull themselves back, they were unable to reduce the Galway men’s lead significantly.

Moycullen continued to rotate players while also maintaining the momentum to ensure a good weekend for the club with the U20 men’s team advancing to the national cup quarter-final over St Vincent’s.
