Salvage mission for Galway women

Galway WFC head to the capital on Sunday to take on UCD Waves in the last game of the season.

Despite a positive start to this year's Continental Tyres WNL, Galway have fallen off the pacesetters, and they travel to Dublin in the hopes of salvaging something from the season.

It will be a tricky assignment. Waves are currently just five points off league leaders Shelbourne, and will view Sunday's fixture as an opportunity to close the gap. However Galway will be looking to get a positive result to end the season on positive note and rebuild for the new season.

Last weekend's defeat to Cork City was unexpected as they ran out 2-0 winners over Galway in Bishopstown.

Galway went into the game as favourites, but the Leesiders were hungrier and had a Lauren Homan brace to thank for their victory.

Homan scored the first of the afternoon on the half hour mark when she cut inside following a great ball from Saoirse Noonan, and her deflected shot beat Tina Hughes in the Galway goal.

Galway were not helped when minutes later Galway’s injury crisis further worsened as centre half Shauna Fox hobbled off, joining international Méabh De Búrca on the bench, who had failed a fitness test just before kick-off.

Galway looked stronger in the second half, but they rarely threatened up front. However, when they pressed for an equaliser, they were caught on the counter attack, and Valerie Mulcahy found Homan who rounded Galway’s centre half and keeper to roll the ball into an empty net in the 84th minute.
