Galway goalscorer De Burca on Irish squad

Galway WFC travel south to Cork in a rearranged fixture with Cork City in the Continental Tyres WNL, kicking off at 2pm in Bishopstown.

It will be a busy weekend for De Búrca who on Saturday will also be part of the Irish squad taking on a Basque Country XI in Tallaght Stadium.

Galway Women’s FC will be hoping for a better return this week, having bossed visitors Peamount United in Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday evening. Despite being the better side for long periods in the game in the end they could only come away with one point in a 1-1 draw.

Galway started impressively, revitalised by their returning captain Méabh De Búrca, who was absent through illness for their last three games. Early on Sadhbh Doyle came close for the hosts when she rattled the crossbar, while on 21 minutes Rachel Baynes had the ball in the net for Galway, only for her effort to be ruled out for offside. Despite their efforts Galway could not break the deadlock and the game remained scoreless at half time.

Two minutes into the second half Galway WFC hit the front. After some great build up play Baynes squared the ball to De Búrca who fired home from close range. Five minutes later Baynes was unlucky to see her shot come back off the post.

Galway continued to press but could not add to their lead. With 15 minutes remaining Peamount grabbed the equaliser when a through ball from Roma McLoughlin found Sara McKevitt who fired high past Tina Hughes in the Galway goal.
