Medals for masters

Galway athletes were in the medals at the 29th annual British & Irish Masters International Cross Country in Glasgow on Saturday.

Competing against masters from England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland in three races were Martin Kearney, Martin McEvilly and Christine Kennedy of GCH, all competing for Ireland, Kearney and Kennedy both came home with team gold in their respective categories (O60 ), and McEvilly claimed a silver team medal at O65 level. Kennedy also picked up an individual silver medal at O60 in the ladies' masters race

In Spain Galway athletes Jamie Fallon and Laura Shaughnessy competed at the cross country international at the weekend.

Fallon placed 34th in the 6km junior race, running 18.58, while Shaughnessy was 40th in the senior ladies event over 8k, in a time of 27.52

Two of Galway's top athletes, US based Keith Fallon (Lamar College ) and Damien O'Boyle (McNeese ) ran in the south central NCAA Regional XC Championships in Arkansas, on Friday, a qualifier for the NCAA cross country championships. Fallon placed a superb 30th, with O'Boyle in 90th in a highly competitive field.

Irish Schools Combined Events

Chloe Casey (St Raphael’s Loughrea ), put in an outstanding performance at yesterday’s Irish Schools Combined Events to take fourth place in the junior girls category with a points total of 2977 and in the process claimed her first international vest with the international due to take place in Athlone on December 11.

Athenry AC 5km

Wheelchair athlete Shauna Bocquet was first over the line in a fast 16.49 in Athenry AC’s Fit4Life 5km. John O'Boyle of St Coca's AC was first man in 18.39, with Cara Gleeson of Galway Triathlon Club first lady in 22.13, closely followed by Emily Bruton of GCH in second.

First in the Fit for Life male category was Sean Folan of GCH, with Peter Rabbitte of Tuam AC in second, and Neil Johnson of GCH third. In the women's event, GCH’s Marietta O'Shea was first home, with Ann Cormican, also GCH, second , and Tuam AC's Karen Hurley in third.

Fixtures

Corrib AC host its annual 'Run Like the Wind' 8k and 4k races on Saturday at 11am. The races take place in Killannin, will be chip timed, and are AAI permitted. Refreshments are available afterwards. The event is on Run Ireland for online entry, or entries can be made on the day.
