New GMIT seminar series to hear Creative Stories from Galway’s designers

Creatives working in the gaming and animation industries will share stories of their work in the first of a series of afternoon seminars at GMIT’s Centre for Creative Arts and Media (CCAM ), which begins tomorrow (Friday ).

The Creative Stories series provides the opportunity to share valuable lessons and insights from leading experts from the creative world. It features successful practitioners from a variety of creative sectors telling their stories, which could be about themselves, their career/business highs and lows, a specific creative project, or their take on topics of importance to their creative practice, enterprise or sector.

This first event is focused on stories from creative practitioners in games and animation and is co-organised by the Centre for Creative Arts & Media (GMIT ), Imirt (The Irish Game Makers Association ), and DesignGalway 2016. The speakers include Moe Honan (Moetion Films ), Alan Duggan (Tribal City Interactive ), Colm Larkin (Gambrinous ), and Brenda Romero (Romero Games/University of Limerick ).

The event is open to the public and admission is free but must be booked online at designgalway.ie/creative-stories

“We are very fortunate in Ireland, and particularly in the west, to have some wonderfully creative people living and working among us,” said Dr Paddy Tobin, head of centre, CCAM. “Creative Stories is an opportunity for the creative community, designers, artists, film-makers and others, to come together to hear the stories and to network with other creative individuals.

“Launching the Creative Stories series, which will include further dates in the new year, during the DesignGalway 2016 festival, is part of a larger commitment by GMIT in the area of Design and Creative Arts,” he added. “We have a strategy, developed with industry partners, to enhance creative career pathways for our students and graduates. In addition to our new programmes, BA Design and MA Creative Practice, we are developing enterprise and entrepreneurship options on campus, and a growing vibrant creative hub.”

During the DesignGalway 2016 festival, CCAM is also hosting designingalway, an exhibition that brings together a diverse range of work produced by Galway designers, including game and animation, production design, graphic design, product design, furniture design, interior design, jewellery, fashion, and textiles. It demonstrates the variety and breadth of design activity in Galway, and the connections and relationships between design disciplines and practising designers.

This first seminar (Game and Animation ) in the Creative Stories series takes place tomorrow, November 4, from 2pm to 5pm at the Centre for Creative Arts & Media, GMIT, Monivea Road, Galway.

The designingalway exhibition runs until November 14, from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 2pm Saturday at CCAM.
