Information evening on type 2 diabetes for World Diabetes Day

The expert diabetes health team from Galway University Hospital, in association with Croí and Diabetes Ireland, will host an interactive patient evening at the Croí Heart and Stroke Centre in Galway on World Diabetes Day, November 14.

According to the Healthy Ireland survey, 854,165 adults aged over 40 in the Republic of Ireland are at increased risk of developing (or have ) type 2 diabetes. A further 304,382 in the 30-39 year age group are overweight and not taking the weekly 150 minutes of recommended physical activity, leaving them at an increased risk of chronic ill health. This means that there are 1,158,547 adults in Ireland who need to consider making changes to their daily behaviours in terms of eating healthily and being more active.

A free one-stop information evening on type 2 diabetes will take place in the Croí Heart & Stroke Centre, Galway, on Monday November 14 from 6.30pm to 9pm. The event is called ‘Healthy Eating and Active Living for Type 2 Diabetes’.

The purpose of the evening is to raise awareness of type 2 diabetes and to provide a one-stop information point for those living with the condition. Announcing details of the event, Professor Sean Dinneen, consultant physician, Galway University Hospitals, said: “This event is open to people of all ages and will answer everything you want to know about type 2 diabetes.” The specialist health team from the Diabetes Unit will be in attendance on the night and speakers will include:

Professor Sean Dinneen (consultant physician, Galway University Hospitals ) will welcome and introduce the evening.

Denise Dunne (specialist cardiac physiotherapist, Croí ) will provide benefits and tips for getting active.

Pauline Dunne (diabetes dietician, Diabetes Ireland ) will speak about healthy eating for type 2 diabetes.

Dr Brian McGuire (professor of clinical psychology and HRB research leader, Galway University Hospitals and NUI Galway ) will speak about implementing positive lifestyle change.

All speakers will participate in a panel discussion at the end of the evening where they will answer questions from the audience.
