Young Galway jobseekers are now being offered the opportunity to up-skill for emerging environmental job opportunities through a free ECO-UNESCO initiative called Green Options.
ECO-UNESCO, the country’s leading environmental education and youth organisation, will deliver the Green Options programme which begins on 7th of November in Galway city, registrations will be taken until the 11th of November. The aim of this innovative programme is to provide young people, aged 25 or under, with the opportunity to gain a QQI qualification, new skills and undertake a valuable work experience to help progress onto employment, or to further and higher education.
The eight week course builds on the success of the organisation’s Green Youth Employability programmes which have been successfully running in Dublin since 2013, and is the first course of its kind to be run outside Dublin.
Green industry is set to be a key growth sector for Ireland over the next decade, the programme focuses on up-skilling young people today, allowing them to be at the forefront of one of tomorrow’s leading sectors.
Commenting on the initiative, ECO-UNESCO’s National Director Elaine Nevin, originally from Galway, said, “We’re looking forward to not only training people for this growing sector, but also to providing them with the confidence, cutting edge skills and work experience that will really put them ahead of the pack in potential employer’s eyes. Youth unemployment in Ireland is still over twice the level of pre-crisis figures, but we have a hugely ambitious and talented youth population. We want to give these young people the chance they deserve and allow their strengths and ideas to flourish in a supportive, pro-active environment.”
With no previous qualifications or background experience necessary, job-seekers interested in developing a career in sustainable development/the environment are bound to find this programme a huge advantage in progressing onto paid employment.
Triona Reid, from Galway, who began the ECO-UNESCO Youth Employability Initiative in April this year, would urge other young people seeking to learn more about the environment and improve their employability to sign up. “I got the advice, support and guidance I needed to progress my career in the direction that I wanted, something I had struggled to do alone. I have now secured full time employment in a career that I am very passionate about. “
ECO-UNESCO’S Green Youth Employability Programmes are approved by the government with support under the Dormant Accounts Fund and Accenture.
