Newly-promoted NUIG Mystics secured their first women’s Super League win in a nailbiter against Meteors at the weekend.
The young NUIG Mystics laid down a marker when they overcame the much-fancied Meteors side 67-59 in NUIG Kingfisher in round two of the Basketball Ireland Women’s Super League.
Not deterred by the 18-12 scoreline in Meteors’ favour at the end of the first quarter, they stepped up to the mark with top scoring from Brittany Glasco (18 ), and 17 points each from Hannah Coen and Ebony Wells, to put them on their way to a memorable victory.
Althoug the sides were level on more than 10 occasions, Mystics’ coach Mike Murray believes a change in defence at the start of the fourth proved decisive.
“We switched our defence and it worked. We took them out,” he said. “It’s absolutely brilliant, I’m so proud of them, they worked really hard.
Mystics now travel to Leixlip, Co Kildare, on Saturday evening at 7.30pm where they will face Courtyard Liffey Celtics.
Elsewhere, the local derby clash between Maree and Titans brought the crowds to Oranmore on Saturday evening, but it was Maree who took control of the game, racking up a fantastic 36 points in the first quarter. Top scoring from Paulius Peldzius (21 ), Kenneth Hansberry (17 ) and Eoin Rockall (15 ) was too much for Titans - despite an in-form Eugene Williams hitting 22 points. Maree ran out 93-51 point winners.
SSE Airtricity Moycullen
SSE Airtricity Moycullen returns to Dublin this weekend as one of 12 teams taking part in the men’s Super Series weekend at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
Games take place at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm each day with admission €5 (children under 16 free ).
Moycullen will take on Irish TV Tralee Warriors on Saturday at 4pm and will want to return to winning ways after an 83-74 loss to Pyrobel Killester.
Moycullen had gone into the game with one win under their belts against KUBS BC, while a determined Killester were hoping to get their first win of the season. The occasion also saw former Moycullen star Cian Nihill up against his old club, and he hit 14 points on the night.
Despite a top-scoring Phillip Lawrence-Ricks hitting 35 for Moycullen, Killester’s Jermaine Turner netted 45 points to send his side to an 83-74 points victory.
