MADRA hosts first ever ‘ doggy dash’ 5k race

Get ready for the Doggy Dash 5k in aid of MADRA — Next Sunday week, on October 9, the first ever MADRA 5k will take place at Cappagh Park, Knocknacarra. The event is open to everyone with the aim of encouraging social running in a fun, friendly setting, welcoming both seasoned runners as well as beginners and walkers. The 5k route which takes you around the Cappagh Park playing fields and through parts of scenic Barna Woods is flat and fast so is perfect for first timers and is also a great PB opportunity for the more seasoned runner.

The event was launched earlier this summer and has since received a lot of support from the public. Spokesperson for MADRA Katie-May North said that they are delighted with the response they have had so far and are especially grateful to Siobhan and Paul Lawless from The Foods of Athenry who are so kindly sponsoring the event.

The 5k is being held in conjunction with MADRA’s ongoing “Raise the Wuff” campaign with all proceeds from the day going to the charity, said Ms North.

“We’re really excited about holding this event and see it as a great way to encourage people to get out and get active whilst also supporting our charity, we really hope all our supporters will come along and help to make the day a great success,” she said.

The 5k race will start at 12 noon on Sunday October 9 and is open to runners and walkers of all abilities. Dogs are not permitted to take part but are welcome to come along and support.

Online entry is open at MADRA5kdoggydash.ie and costs €22, with free printed technical running t-shirts still available for the first 150 entrants. On the day entry is also optional with registration open from 10.30am.

MADRA is a Connemara-based dog rescue and adoption charity dedicated to finding new homes for dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds. Annually, the charity rescues an average of 800 dogs from local authority pounds and dogs surrendered by the general public.
