Galway women focused on avenging cup loss to Wexford

Galway WFC will be already plotting revenge for their cup loss to Wexford Youths in preparation of their next meeting on September 24.

Wexford forced Galway's exit from the Continental Tyres Women’s FAI Cup after winning 3-2 in Sunday's quarter-final in Ferrycarrig Park, and they meet again on Saturday week in their fourth round league tie in Galway.

Last weekend Galway suffered a disastrous start when Wexford went two goals clear, and despite Lucy Hannon scoring twice for Galway, it was not enough to stop Wexford Youths progressing to the next round.

All the action came in an action-packed first half. The hosts went two-nil up after 11 minutes. Claire O’Riordan grabbed the first from a back post header on five minutes, before Jess Gleeson added to their tally with a volley six minutes later.

Galway regrouped and fought their way into the game with Hannon grabbing her first on 22 minutes when dispossessing Gleeson and beating keeper Sophie Lenehan at the near post. But a minute later O’Riordan had restored Youths' two-goal lead with a long range strike.

However Hannon kept Galway in the game, picking the ball up in midfield and driving unopposed through the Wexford defence before unleashing from 30 yards into the top corner for the goal of the game on 34 minutes.

Galway continued to get back on level terms, they did not have the fire power up front, particularly after Hannon was forced off with injury, and in the end Wexford held on to book their place in the semi-final.

O'Riordan's focus will now return to the league in which Galway, with two wins and a draw, occupy third place behind leaders Peamount United and UCD Waves, who have played an extra game.
