Crowe slams Government for 'inaction' on housing crisis

Cllr Ollie Crowe has this week slammed the Government for their "inaction and seeming ignorance of the housing crisis".

The Government recently launched its housing plan, which aims to build 45,000 new social housing units by 2021, but Cllr Crowe said he had confirmed with Galway City Council that not one social housing unit would be built this year or in 2017 in Galway city, and he said there were no guarantees about 2018.

“At a time when we have 15,000 people on the housing lists in Galway city this is simply unacceptable," Cllr Crowe asserted. "Action is needed now, not more Government spin. The only way to make an effective dent in our housing crisis is with supply, and for there to be no social housing coming on stream until 2018 at the earliest is only going to ensure that list grows further.

“This is a major issue which we have heard too much talk from the Government on," he added. "Since Fine Gael took office in 2011 not a single social housing unit has been built in Galway city. What needs to happen now is the investment of resources rather than announcing plans and media spin.”
