Irish Water will submit a planning application to the Galway County Council next week for the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and pumping station and associated pipelines at Mountkelly, Glenamaddy, as part of the upgrade to the Glenamaddy sewerage scheme.
The new plant will replace the old plant that is overloaded and discharging partly treated effluent into a special area of conservation. The proposed works, which include works on the existing sewer network, will improve the final treated effluent quality, reduce the risk of ground water pollution and significantly reduce the impact that the existing wastewater treatment plant is currently having on the Lough Lurgeen bog/Glenamaddy turlough. It will also cater for the current and future needs of the town.
Irish Water says it has already invested significantly in this project, and the overall cost is estimated at €2.5 million. Once submitted, the planning application may be inspected at Galway County Council's planning office, and accessed online at www.galway.ie
