Galway's Sean Breathnach was arguably the athlete at the National Masters track and field championships, dominating the throws M35 category as expected.
The Galway City Harriers man won the shot putt with 16.99m, the javelin with 42.80m, the discus with 46.54m, and the weight for distance with 7.81m to make it a golden quadruple. He also won silver in the hammer with 33.48m behind Thomas Bouchier’s (Ferrybank ) winning throw of 33.92m.
Richard O'Hanlon of GCH took medals at O60 in the shot, discus and long jump, while Mary Barrett of Loughrea AC was also successful in the long jump and in the field at O 55 level.
Martin McEvilly of GCH took two golds and a silver at O65 level with the wins in the 1500 and 5000m events and the silver over 800m, while Peter O'Sullivan of Craughwell AC claimed silver in a hard-fought 040 1500m, and Eamonn Hornibrook of GCH secured bronze with a fine run at O45 level.
Claregalway 10k
Matt Bidwell of GCH took the honours at a well-supported Claregalway 10k on Saturday. Bidwell ran 32.59 to take a comfortable victory from Karol Cronin of Sportsworld in second, with Jason Broderick of Craughwell AC making a welcome return to action in third place in 34.54
First woman home was multiple Irish cross country champion Michelle McGee of DSD AC in Dublin in a quick time of 36.27, with GCH athletes Regina Casey -37.10 and Sarah Collins -38.23 in second and third respectively.
