Grealish demands Coillte explain selling of Clarinbridge woodlands

Coillte must send representatives to a public meeting to answer local fears which have arisen from the State forestry company's controversial decision to sell 25 acres of mature woodland near Clarinbridge.

This is the call of Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish, who is demanding the company state its reasons for the sale of the land at Kilcornan. The site, which includes trees that are almost 150 years old, is located close to Clarinbridge, fronting onto the L4102 link road between Clarinbridge and the Galway-Craughwell road.

In a letter to Coillte CEO Fergal Leamy, Dep Grealish has asked him to explain why the land has been put up for sale by private treaty. “Local residents are concerned the land will be made available to a developer for housing development which may have an impact on flooding in the area," he wrote. "They are also concerned about the loss of mature trees, flora, fauna and the possible loss of a Mass rock which is of historical significance."

Dep Grealish is also calling on Mr Leamy to send a representative to a public meeting in Clarinbridge to discuss the proposed sale. “This meeting," the Carnmore based TD wrote, "can be organised to suit the diary of your Coillte representative and I believe it would be an important step in securing local support for any future plans for this site."
