Independent Cllr Daniel Callanan is coming ever closer to a final decision on whether or not he will run in June’s Local Election.
The outspoken councillor was adamant for a long time that he would not seek re-election, but over the last year his appetite has returned prompting speculation that he would throw his hat into the ring again.
Cllr Callanan is consulting with supporters and will be viewing the figures of the various polls that are being conducted in the area. He will then make his decision within the next fortnight.
“It’s a big thing starting from scratch in a new ward and I may say no as much as I might say yes, I am looking at running,” he told the Galway Advertiser.
Cllr Callanan was originally elected as a Sinn Féin councillor for the North and East Ward (now Galway City East ) in 2004. He left the party to go Independent and is now living in the Galway City West ward. It is in this latter ward he will run if he decides to stand for election.
What has led Cllr Callanan to think that he should consider running again?
“The Galway City Council budget was very successful and showed what can be done when people work together,” he said. “The council has been very fractious and too political. Over the last five years the councillors have handed over control to the officials as they have been so divided.
“Given the disappearance of the PDs the next council will be much more independent looking which will give more opening to work together. It will be less party political. I think that will lead to a more functioning council and I would hope to have a part to play in that
