DINOSAUR JR's comeback, ongoing for more than a decade, has largely been a success, with 2009's Farm in particular, proving they still had 'it' and something very worthwhile to say.
That said 2011's lacklustre and pedestrian I Bet On Sky was a disappointment, with J Mascis's solo albums from the period providing better testament to his talents. Thankfully any concerns that Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph, had run out of steam are instantly dispelled by opening track, 'Goin' Down', propelled by the crunching guitar chugg of its central riff.
The Barlow penned 'Tiny' would not sound out of place on any albums from the band's classic era, particularly given Mascis's spindly, psychedelic guitar solo, and obligatory feedback ending. Barlow also contributes another highlight in 'Love Is...', a moody, ambiguous alt.rock ballad, with elements of the darker side of American roots and country. Mascis though outdoes him on the sombre, heavier, more melancholic 'Mirror', which boasts some great post-Sabbath riffs. 'Knocked Around' (also written by Mascis ), comes close, its gentle pace, erupting into frantic life with more fine guitar work.
While we are not talking You're Living All Over Me or Bug, we are talking about a very satisfying album, one that never diminishes, but instead upholds Dinosaur Jr's estimable reputation.
