The Galway city council has voted in favour of holding a civic reception for the Connacht Rugby team.
The motion proposed by Labour councillor Billy Cameron was backed by all the councillors present in the chamber to celebrate the province's success.
Connacht won the Guinness Pro 12 title for the first time when they defeated Leinster at BT Murrayfield 20-10 at the end of May.
Cllr Cameron said: "Given it is the first major trophy in the side's history, the achievement deserves recognition, and as the capital of the province, Galway should mark it. The people have spoken as well, with the huge crowds who greeted the team in Galway during the victory parade and the thousands who travelled to Edinburgh to cheer on the team."
No date has been set for the reception.
In addition Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Crowe recommended that Connacht members of the Irish U-20 rugby team and coach Nigel Carolan should be acknowledged as well for their efforts in reaching the final of the World Rugby U-20 Championship.
Cllr Michael Crowe said: "A number of Connacht players were involved in the under 20 team who made the final of the World Cup and the coach is one of our own, Nigel Carolan. It is only right they should be recognised alongside the Connacht Rugby team as well."
