Greene grabs gold to seal place at world champs

Galway sprinter Cillin Greene has been selected to complete at the World Junior Athletic Championships after grabbing the limelight at the nationals last weekend.

Greene, running for Galway City Harriers, claimed the junior 200m sprint at the national junior and U23 track and field championships in Tullamore at the weekend, sealing his place on the Irish 4X100m relay team.

He now travels with the Irish squad to Poland for the championships at the end of July.

Greene was one of several successful Galway competitors at the nationals with gold medal winning performances from Jamie Fallon of Craughwell AC in the junior men’s 5000m, clocking 15.38, and Veronica Burke of Ballinasloe and District AC, who took the U23 Ladies' 3k walk.

Jerry Keary of Craughwell AC took the junior bronze in the high jump, clearing 1.90 metres, with Bryan Ndego of GCH fifth with 1.80m.

William Flynn (NUIG ) performed well in the U23 400m, finishing fourth in 50.3, with Robert Meagher of GCH placing sixth in the same race with a PB of 50.85. Sprinter Laura Ann Costello of GCH was fifth in the final of the junior 100m, while Aisling Joyce, who runs with Yeats College, was impressive in the junior ladies 1500m, coming second in a superb 4.39. Maebh Brannigan of GCH came seventh in the same event with a good time of 4.54.

Headford 8k

Rory Chesser of Ennis Track AC stormed to victory in the 12th running of the Headford 8k on Saturday evening,

A huge field of some 250 took to the roads around the north Galway town, and Chesser, who went straight to the front from the start, came home well clear of the field in a course record of 24.48. Second was Athenry AC’s Gearoid Rohan in 28.31, and Sean Burke of Tuam AC was third. Regina Casey of GCH was first woman home in a superb new course record of 28.36, and next home were Jane Ann Meehan of Athenry AC in 29.24, and Caroline Conway of Mayo AC in 29.36

Track results

A number of Galway’s top junior middle distance athletes were in action in the Cork City Sports on Tuesday. Jamie Fallon of Craughwell AC and Eanna Folan of GCH ran well in a quality junior 1500m, clocking 4.07 and 4.12, with other GCH youngsters Joe Tannian 4.17 and Mark Powell 4.24 also impressing. Keith Fallon of GCH ran 1.57 over 800m at the Letterkenny International meet on Saturday.

Fixtures

The National Juvenile Track and Field championships take centre stage next weekend in Tullamore with two days of competition, including the relay events.
