Drum clinic with jazzman Coté Calmet

Peruvian jazz drumming great gives drum workshop in Galway

DRUMMERS, PARTICULARLY those with an interest in jazz, will have an opportunity to learn from the acclaimed Peruvian jazz drummer Coté Calmet, who will give a drum clinic and workshop in Galway this evening.

Multi-instrumentalist Calmet has played drums since 15. Influenced by Latin American music and rock, as well as Jazz, he was working as a session drummer and playing live by 18. While still a student he was asked to direct his first masterclass in rhythm and performance at the Universidad Catolica del Peru, which boasts a large and renowned music department.

His debut album Phisqa, was described by All About Jazz thus: "What set Phisqa apart from most other contemporary jazz bands was Calmet's transposing of Afro-Peruvian rhythms to his kit, and his effusive, energetic playing was at the centre of everything." Cote has also worked with The CEO Experiment (pianist Leopoldo Osio and bassist Peter Erdei ) and the African Dance Power band Manden Express.

Rhythm Drum School presents Coté Calmet in The Loft, Seven, at 7.30pm. Admission is €10.
