The Skeff are delighted to have nominated BUMBLEance as their 2016 charity partner.
“BUMBLEance is the world’s first and only, fully interactive, state-of-the-art Children’s National Ambulance Service.”
As part of The Saoirse Foundation, BUMBLEance ensures the safe transportation of critically ill children between their home and paediatric hospitals, hospices, national treatment centres and respite centres nationwide. They also provide a unique and vital service through their Angel Trips, the last journey a child takes on earth before he or she grows their Angel Wings.
General Manager Brian O’Toole says it was a unanimous staff decision when they researched BUMBLEance and then met with Tony Heffernan, who co-founded BUMBLEance with his wife Mary.
“BUMBLEance ensures that the journey of a sick child who needs ambulance transportation to and from a treatment centre and their home is the safest and most comfortable journey possible. Tony, Mary, and their team of busy volunteers have done remarkable work since launching in 2013, and we thought we could contribute also in some way. So we are dedicating the summer months to raising money and awareness to buy essential equipment for the BUMBLEances currently on the road.”
Speaking at the launch of the charity partnership in Eyre Square this week, Tony says their aim is to “distract, comfort and entertain Ireland’s youngest patients as they travel to and from paediatric treatment centres nationwide. We are thrilled to have The Skeff team on board and thank them for nominating us as their 2016 charity partner.”
Tony and Mary saw the need for this critical service first-hand as they had to transport both of their children, Saoirse and Liam, to and from hospitals for regular treatments. Both children suffered from Batten’s Disease, a rare genetic disorder of the brain. Saoirse lost her battle with the fatal disease in 2011, age 5 and Liam also passed away in 2014, also age 5. BUMBLEance was created so that no other family would have to deal with the hardships of transporting a critically ill child.
