United welcome break after disappointing draw with Derry

alway United's SSE Airtricity League premier division clash against Derry City ended in bitter disappointment, despite dominating the majority of Friday's game.

Candystripes' midfielder Conor McCormack was sent off in the 28th minute, but United squandered a string of decent chances ensuring Derry left the west armed with a point.

United assistant manager Leo Tierney admitted it was a "disappointment" not to secure victory.

"I suppose when they went down to 10 men, we're thinking that we can push on to win it," Tierney reflected. "I think, in fairness, Derry defended really well.

"We kept a clean sheet, we had great possession of the ball, but in the last third we just didn't have the cut.

"We brought on attacking players, we had a right good go at it. The ball didn't just fall for us, we had one goal disallowed, the keeper made a few saves, it was just a little bit frustrating," Tierney said.

While happy to keep a clean sheet, to get a point after the last couple of results, the assistant said United just failed to their take opportunities, while McCormack's red card disrupted the match as United had been bright initially.

"Obviously we would have expected a little more because we had so much possession," Tierney commented.

"You'd be hoping to work the keeper more, but I think it just didn't fall for us. We had opportunities, on another night they would have fallen for us. It was the type of a game that if you got one, you could have gone on to get two or three, but to get that first goal just proved difficult. This league is difficult.

I think it spoiled the game because before the sending off it had the makings of a right good game. Both sides were having a go and then they were just trying to defend properly, to hit us on the counter attack. In fairness to them they did that and they carried a threat.

"From our side of it, we are a little disappointed, but we are glad that we got the point in the end. They had an opportunity and Conor [Winn] had to make a save."

With Euro 2016 commencing tomorrow, domestic action takes a mid-season break until June 24 when United travel to Dalymount Park for a fixture against Bohemians.

Those recovering from injury such as Colm Horgan, Stephen Walsh, and Padraic Cunningham may return to action then.

"The break will do them good, and, in fairness, some of the lads were tired and carrying knocks. It will give the lads time to recover, so hopefully when we come back they will be available for selection."
