Twenty-two of Galway’s most determined and hard-working first time boxers are being put through their paces with Corrib KickBoxing Club to take to the ring at 8pm tomorrow night Friday June 3 at the Clayton Hotel, for an exciting white collar boxing event, raising vital funds for the national meningitis support and awareness charity ACT for Meningitis.
Now in their sixth week of an intense and extremely tough eight-week training programme, these everyday heroes have thrown themselves into the challenge, some in memory of a loved one lost to meningitis, some whom have witnessed first-hand the devastation this disease can have on individuals, families and whole communities, but each one of them, to raise the funds necessary to help ACT.
Their aid will help ACT continue to save lives through awareness and rebuild futures through the vast range of free support services they continue to provide across the country.
In the absence of on-going government funding, ACT for Meningitis depend on the support of fundraising events like this to continue to expand their support services, training and awareness campaigns. Now providing free support to families and individuals in 15 counties in Ireland, they have experienced a 61 per cent increase in need of these services since 2013.
Thanks to public support, the charity were delighted to launch their brand new Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Workshops in Galway last month “You, Your Thoughts and Your Actions”, for survivors of meningitis, parents whose children have had meningitis and those bereaved by the disease.
This service will be launched in Dublin later this year and will eventually be available nationwide. Their national training workshops have also been launched this month with a series of meningitis awareness training days provided to over 90 nationwide Llyods Pharmacies.
