THE CENTENARY of the 1916 Rising and its aftermath will continue to be marked in Galway with two events taking place, one today, the other later this month.
This afternoon at 3pm, Bealach na Saoirse, an exhibition about the 1916 Rising will be opened in City Hall. A variety of historical items relating to the Rising and Galway in 1916 will be on display, including the minutes of the Galway Urban Distric Council, which record councillors condemning the Rising, as well as a letter praising the District Inspector of the RIC for his actions at Carnmore. The exhibition runs until the end of the year.
The next event will be on Wednesday May 25 in Bohermore Cemetery, with a wreath laying by the Mayor of Galway Frank Fahy to honour those who took part in the Rising and the 1919-21 War of Independence. There will be music and poetry from Áine Sheridan and Gerry Hanberry. Relatives of participants in the Irish Revolution will also attend.
The public is welcome to both events.
