IT TOOK three years for Maverick Sabre to release his long awaited second album Innerstanding, which arrived late last year, but with that now under his belt, he's back touring and is coming to Galway.
The British-Irish singer-songwriter plays Strange Brew at the Róisín Dubh on Thursday May 19 at 8pm, in what is billed as "an intimate evening with...", performing songs from the nwe album and his 2012 debut Lonely Are The Brave.
It would be fair to describe Maverick (aka Michael Stafford ) as a multi-genre performer, with his music encompassing hip-hop, rap, urban, and singer-songwriter. He has recorded at the Tuff Gong studios in Jamaica; sang with an 80 piece orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall; worked alongside Idris Elba in South Africa, and performed at Damon Albarn's Africa Express show in France.
Speaking to The Irish Times about his experiences, he said: "I had been to Jamaica before, but you see another side of Jamaica in Kingston. When you go out there as a musician, you’re affected in a way I wasn’t expecting. I’ve found that Irish and Jamaican cultures are very similar...The more I travelled and the more people I met, the more I forced myself to question myself... I needed to go away and be inspired by other music and come back fresh."
