Bartenders from all over Galway gathered recently in the celebrated Garavan’s Bar, Connacht’s Irish Whiskey Bar of the Year 2014 and 2015, to compete in what was described as the Irish Coffee event of the year. Run by Garavan’s, in association with Power’s Irish Whiskey, the bartenders showcased their skills by creating both a traditional and a signature Irish coffee for celebrity judges chef Kevin Dundon and Ireland’s top mixologist Ariel Sanecki.
With return flights to San Francisco and a cool €500 spending money up for grabs, even MC Hector Ó hEochagáin was almost tempted to give it a go himself! But Amy Joyce from the Blue Note Bar proved a worthy winner on the night with her delicious s’mores inspired Irish coffee, and is genuinely looking forward to visiting the famous Buena Vista Café (credited with introducing Irish Coffee to the United States in 1952 ) while in San Francisco.
Garavan’s Bar Manager Brian Taylor was thrilled with the response and said “We take great pride in our Irish Coffee here at Garavan’s. It’s fantastic to be able to hold an event like this and see other bartenders hone their Irish Coffee skills”.
Garavan’s have built a reputation of having one of the best Irish Coffees in the country. Carefully prepared using Powers Irish Whiskey, they serve it in a specifically designed Garavan’s glass, with a branded Belgian chocolate on the side. Heaven! Make sure you get into Garavan’s on Shop Street and try one for yourself!
