Charity event in celebration of James Connolly

JAMES CONNOLLY was executed for his leading role in the 1916 Rising on May 12 1916. On Thursday May 12 his life and ideals will be celebrated at a charity event to raise funds for Médecins Sans Frontières.

Connolly was a Scots born socialist, internationalist, and supporter of women’s rights. He also wrote poems and songs. He summed them up his beliefs in one of his poems: "For our demands most moderate are, We only want the earth." Commandant-General of the Irish Volunteers in the Easter Rising, Connolly was wounded in the GPO. Unable to stand due to his wounds, he was later executed by firing squad.

The event takes place in The Crane Bar, Sea Road, from 8pm. It will begin with Fionnuala Gallagher reading Connolly’s poetry; In tribute to the women of 1916, Scottish storyteller Rab Fulton, will tell a ghost story called The Wicked Woman; Ellie Cummins, a relation of Margaret Keogh, a nurse who was the first civilian casualty of the 1916 Rising, will read the 1916 Proclamation.

Admission is €10/8 and all money raised will go to Médecins Sans Frontières.
