Galway will know tomorrow if it can be European Youth Capital 2019

Galway city will know tomorrow if it has succeeded in making the short-list for the European Youth Capital 2019 status. However, it faces competition from 12 other cities.

The shortlist of five contenders will be announced tomorrow, with the overall winner declared the European Youth Forum’s General Assembly in Varna, Bulgaria, in November. This is the third time Galway has sought to become European Youth Capital, having reached the final for the 2016 and 2017 bids.

The title of European Youth Capital, currently held by Ganja in Azerbaijan, affords the winner an opportunity to showcase its youth related cultural, social, political and economic life.

A delegation of 11, representing the Galway bid, will travel to the upcoming European Youth Event in Strasbourg in May to host a Galway hub to showcase the city to the 7,000 young people attending the festival. One of the key events the Galway hub will be hosting is 'Tea with an MEP' where young people can meet and an MEP while sampling Solaris Tea and biscuits from The Galway Food Company.

The NUI Galway Students’ Union is part of the European Youth Capital bid. "The enthusiasm of the team volunteers is testament to the thriving youth culture in the city and its rich contribution to the ethos of Galway," said NUIG SU president Phelim Kelly. "I would like to ask the people of Galway to support the bid, which would mean a huge cultural and economic boost for the city."
