Galway athletes on track

Galway had two winners at the universities track and field championships in Santry at the weekend.

Keith Fallon and Evan Mcguire, both of GCH and running for DCU, produced great performances to take victory in the 5000m and 400m hurdles respectively.

Fallon ran with the lead pack throughout and took control of the race with two laps to go. Despite late surges from his rivals Liam Brady and Neil Johnston, Fallon eased to victory in a PB of 15.05.

Peadar Harvey of GMIT ran a good 15.58 and Andrew O Donnghaile of NUIG ran 16.01 in the same race.

Evan Mcguire, beset by injury problems in the last year, was the clear winner in the 400m hurdles. Mcguire finished in 54.77, a good season opener, and he will hope to carry this form into the National League and championships with GCH.

NUIG also saw medals from Aengus Meldon with a superb silver in the 800 metres, and Conall Mahon who placed third in the triple jump, while Alanna Lally, formerly of GCH and now a UCD athlete, took 800m ladies' bronze.

Niamh Hennelly of NUIG was eighth in the women’s 3000m in a PB of 10.57, while Robert Meaghar placed seventh in the 400m final.

National 10k team medals

Galway City Harriers ladies won team silver medals at over 50 level in the National 10k championships in Dublin. Owen Byrne, Gerry Carty and Brian Bruton took a well-deserved team bronze behind Sligo AC in the men's masters.
