IRISH FOLKLORE and poetry as Gaeilge, and what they reveal about our cultural DNA, our sense of place, self, and imagination, will be explored in a film to be screened during the Cúirt literary festival.
Fís na Fuiseoige/The Lark's View, featuring contributions from such esteemed poets as Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Cathal Ó Searcaigh, and Louis de Paor, along with Gaeltacht raconteur and broadcaster, Seosamh Ó Cuaig, will be screened in An Taibhdhearc, Middle Street, this Saturday at 11am.
Fís na Fuiseoige is a visual exploration of the landscape of Ireland, with some stunning aerial cinematography. It explores the close relationship between the Irish people and the land, and how the concepts of space and place have helped construct Irish identity and, in turn, produced poetry and local lore. Directed by Aodh Ó Coileáin, a lecturer at NUI Galway, it was produced by Colm Hogan and Marina Levitina of Counterpoint Films, based in Headford.
Sean Finnan of Film Ireland called it a "documentary to be treasured. Few others have made the argument of the importance of the Irish language’s survival in such a subtly celebratory manner while in the process highlighting its absurd vacuous place in Irish official life."
The film had a sell-out premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival in February and has been selected for the Earth Day Film Festival in San Francisco.
