New city GAA club seeks players

Galway’s newest GAA club, Gaeil na Gaillimhe, is seeking players for mens and women’s football teams this year.

The city-based club is the only Irish-speaking one in County Galway outside of the Gaeltacht areas.

The club was founded in late 2015, following the ThinkDay conference in Dublin, a brainstorming event for young language activists to make practical steps to promote Irish in their own communities. Gaeil na Gaillimhe provides an opportunity for people in Galway to speak Irish in a relaxed, social setting. All levels of Irish are welcome, from native speaker to those with a cúpla focal – anyone willing to give it a go is welcome.

The men’s team begin in the division 7 league west and will play in the junior C championship. Their first league match will be against Michéal Breathnachs on April 20. The women’s team plays in the division 6 league this year, and had their first match against Carna-Caiseal on March 25. Their next match against Kilconly takes place on April 16.

Training takes place twice a week. For more information e-mail [email protected] or through facebook message atfacebook.com/GaeilnaGaillimhe
