Maynooth students cycle into Galway after epic 200km trek for Down Syndrome

More than 200 cyclists will descend on Galway tomorrow after an epic 200km journey from Maynooth.

All cyclists and support crew will arrive into Eyre Square at approximately 5.30pm tomorrow to raise funds for Down Syndrome Ireland.

The Galway Cycle is organised by Maynooth Students for Charity, and they and Down Syndrome Ireland are urging Galway residents to come out and support the cause.

The hardy bunch are starting their journey from NUI Maynooth at 6.30am tomorrow morning with hopes of arriving about 5.30pm.

All the money raised from the Galway Cycle will help fund Down Syndrome Ireland’s education programme which works with schools and families to ensure children with Down Syndrome can access education and get the support they need.

The Cycle will also help fund a new multi-purpose family area for people with Down Syndrome and their families. The family area will incorporate sensory equipment, a play area, specialist resources and a social space where DSI members can meet, socialise and engage with our services.

Pat Clarke, CEO of Down Syndrome Ireland, said: “We’re so grateful to Maynooth Students for Charity for supporting Down Syndrome Ireland and the work we do around the country.

“We’re urging the people of Galway to come out and support the cyclists along the route and to support Down Syndrome Ireland in any way they can throughout the weekend.

“All the money raised will help extend our education programme for children with Down Syndrome and will also help us develop a much needed multi-purpose family area for people with Down Syndrome and their families.
