The Camino Society Ireland, formerly The Irish Society of the Friends of St James, will hold an Information Day on the Camino de Santiago in St Nicholas Collegiate Church, Market St, Galway,on Saturday April 9 (12 noon ).
The talk and practical information demonstration will begin at 12.15pm and seasoned experienced Camino walkers will be available to answer questions.
Camino passports and guide books will be on sale also for those planning to walk the Camino. Or if it is on your bucket list, this is an opportunity to meet members of this voluntary organisation which was founded in Ireland in 1992 to promote the pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostela in north-western Spain
The Camino de Santiago, the Way of St James, or more often than not simply referred to as The Way or The Camino is a world famous pilgrimage and often and aptly described as one of the world's greatest travel experiences. A journey of the soul and spirit taking the traveller in the footsteps of millions who, over the centuries have walked to Santiago de Compostela to venerate the tomb of St James. You are required to walk the final 100kms to qualify for the official pilgrim's certificate upon reaching the magnificent cathedral in Santiago.
In 2015, more than 5,300 Irish pilgrims walked or cycled into Santiago. People choose to make the trip for many reasons - be it adventure, religious, spiritual, fundraisers for many Irish charities, or many just to challenge themselves. Some travel in groups, some alone, but all with one purpose, to reach Santiago; the quietly enchanting ancient yet vibrant city of cobbled streets and stone arches. Pilgrims go in search of Spain, and most return home with much, much, more.
