Daring vocals and pumping rhythms

Opera, classical music, and DJs in a Music For Galway gig @ Electric

CLASSICAL MUSIC goes clubbing next month when opera singer Salome Kammer, the Vogler Quartet, and DJ Cyril Briscoe join forces for a show at the Electric Garden & Theatre on Friday April 8 at 8pm.

Emulating the format of Berlin’s Yellow Lounge, Music for Galway and Electric Garden & Theatre come together to bring classical music into the realm of the night club, with The Volger Quartet - Tim Vogler, Frank Reinecke, Stefan Fehlandt and Stephan Forck - performing Haydn's String Quartet Op 20 no 4 and String Quartet No 1 by Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff.

There will also be songs by Kurt Weill - including 'Mac the Knife' and 'Alabama Song' - arranged for soprano and string quartet by the Volger's Steffen Schleiermacher. Singing will be Salome Kammer, whose vocal experteise encompasses avant garde, classical melodrama, lieder, dada lyrics, jazz, and broadway songs.

The night will also see DJ sets by Cyril Briscoe (110th Street ), Electric resident John Daly (techno, disco, house, ambient ), New Jackson (aka singer-songwriter David Kitt, playing nocturnal house jams with a ghostly disco tint ), and Berlin-based, Swiss-born, DJ Quarion.

Tickets are €20/16/10 via Music For Galway (091 - 705962, www.musicforgalway.ie ) or Opus II, High Street.
