"LIKE EARLY Beefheart meets Add N To X" is how Belfast duo Exmagician describe their music, and Galway has a chance to hear that claim up close and personal when the band play the Róisín Dubh.
Exmagician are Danny Todd and James Smith, the songwriting partnership behind Cashier No 9, the band behind the David Holmes produced album, To The Death Of Fun, which received widespread critical acclaim in 2011. As Exmagician, the pair are exploring new avenues, propelled by a love of adventurous, psychedelic sounds, and an interest in combining riff led guitar with synths.
The duo release their new album, Scan The Blue on Bella Union tomorrow, and play the Róisín's upstairs bar on Monday April 4 at 9pm. The album follows the Kiss That Wealth Goodbye EP which received support across Irish radio, BBC Radio 1, 6music, Absolute, and stateside on KEXP.
"David Holmes lent me a Korg MS-20 and then I bought one myself," says Danny. "That synth shaped a lot of the record." Speaking about the subject matter of the songs, he adds: “Hope, trust, and revenge. They always fall into those three categories.”
