DEAN STRANG, the Wisconsin attorney who was one of the trial lawyers for Steven Avery in Making A Murderer, the Netflix documentary which has become an international phenomenon, will be in Galway in the autumn where he will give a public interview.
Making A Murderer explores the story of Steven Avery, who served 18 years in prison for the sexual assault and attempted murder of Penny Beerntsen, before being exonerated in 2003. In 2005, he was arrested in connection with the murder of Teresa Halbach and convicted in 2007. The series also covers the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of Avery's nephew, Brendan Dassey, who was also charged in the murder. The 10-part documentary, written and directed by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, was filmed over 10 years.
In his Galway interview, Mr Strang will discuss systemic failures in the US criminal justice system, as well as the broader implications of the Steven Avery case. Mr Strang is a member of the American Law Institute and serves on several charity boards, including the Wisconsin Innocence Project. He is an adjunct professor at Marquette University Law School, the University of Wisconsin Law School, and University of Wisconsin's Division of Continuing Studies. He was Wisconsin’s first Federal Defender for five years. He is also the author of Worse Than The Devil: Anarchists, Clarence Darrow, and Justice in a Time of Terror. His next book will be out in 2018.
