MORE THAN 40 medical students in NUI Galway will perform music and song from the first 20 years of the 20th century in a concert entitled War, Freedom, Love and Loss, in the Aula Maxima, on campus, on Thursday March 24 at 7pm.
A collaboration between the university’s English, School of Medicine, and Drama, Theatre and Performance departments, the show is the 'grand finale' to NUIG Arts in Action's A Nation Rising/Éire á Muscailt programme. It will feature actors from NUI Galway Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance in a dramatised production researched and narrated by Professor Sean Ryder, head of English, and directed by actor/writer/theatre director Caroline lynch. The music and songs are researched and directed by Carl Hession.
Three of the 1916 leaders - Pádraic Pearse, Thomas MacDonagh and Joseph Mary Plunkett - were accomplished poets and their poems will be read as part of the event, backed by music and song from the 1914-1916 period. The work of other poets, such as Eva Gore-Booth, who also responded to the events of the time, wil also be read.
