THE LIVES of combatants and civilians during the 1916 Rising, and a teacher determined to expose a classroom thief, make up the two films the Galway Film Society screens in the Town Hall Theatre this Sunday.
A Terrible Beauty (3.30pm ), directed by David and Keith Farrell, focuses on two of the most ferocious battles of Easter week, at Mount Street Bridge and the area around North King Street. It tells the story from the perspective of Irish Volunteers, British soldiers, and civilians, through archive footage, dramatic reconstructions, and first hand accounts. The film won Best Documentary at the 2013 Crystal Palace International Film Festival in London.
The Lesson (8pm ), a Grego-Bulgarian film, directed by Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov, is about Nadezhda, a schoolteacher in a small, rural, town, who vows to expose a young classroom thief. At home, her deadbeat husband has squandered the family’s mortgage payments, leaving Nadezhda just three days to save their home from the auction block. As time runs out, she has her principles tested. The film won Best New Director at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
