MUSIC BY Mozart, as well as the Irish premiere of Jonathan Dove's 'Figures in the Garden', will be performed in Galway by eight leading national and international wind players
Mozart Wind Serenades, this year's Emily Anderson Annual Memorial Concert, organised by Music for Galway, takes place on Friday February 19 at 8pm in the Aula Maxima, NUI Galway.
Mozart's Overture to The Magic Flute, his Serenade in E flat major K 375, and Serenade in C minor K 388, as well as the piece by Dove, will be performed by oboists Nicholas Daniel and Conor Cavanagh; clarinetists Chen Halevi and Macdara Ó Seireadáin; bassoonists Amy Harman and John Hearne; and French horn players Martin Owen and Cuan Ó Seireadáin. The musicians come from Ireland, Israel, and Britain.
Jonathan Dove's piece was inspired by themes from Mozart’s opera The Marriage of Figaro. It was commissioned by Glyndebourne Opera Festival in the UK in 1991 to mark the bicentenary of Mozart’s death.
Emily Anderson was born in 1891, the daughter of the then president of the Queen’s College Galway, Alexander Anderson. She studied German and lectured at the university, before leaving Ireland to work in the British Foreign Office. She later translated the full correspondence of Mozart and Beethoven. The translations remain an invaluable resource to scholars.
