Newcomers Athenry face St Mary's in schools final

The highlight of the Connacht schools soccer competition sees two Galway outfits meeting this evening (Thursday ).

Experienced St Mary's College and newcomers Presentation College Athenry will contest the 2016 FAI Schools Senior A Cup final in Terryland Park (7.15pm ).

The city college are back in the final for the first time since 2012 - the year they were last crowned Connacht champions when they defeated Presentation College, Headford - while it is a first final appearance for Presentation College.

St Mary's booked their place in the final with a recent 3-2 semi-final victory over Ballinrobe Community School, while Athenry won a dramatic penalty shootout with St Louis College, Kiltimagh after the sides drew 3-3, after extra time.

The city college management of Paul Concannon and David O'Boyle will be looking for big performances from the talented trio of Tommy Molloy, Nathan Ward and Kamil Syzmaszek as they attempt to win their 11th senior Connacht title.

Athenry's coaches, Johnathan Linnane and Joe Finnerty, will look to Barry Goldrick, Oisin Connolly and Ryan Shaughnessy will lead their teammates to a historic cup win.

The Connacht champions will advance to meet their Munster counterparts in the All-Ireland semi-final.
