Tuam race to attract top local runners

Some of Galway's top athletes are expected to be in action this Sunday for the 12th annual Tuam AC New Year Road Race.

A big field of some 500 entries is anticipated, with the in-form Jason Broderick, and GCH athletes Matt Bidwell and Regina Casey, expected to contest for honours.

The event, which starts at 2.30pm, boasts prizes in all categories, including first three men and women, all age categories, and the first two men and women's teams. The race is chip timed, with race headquarters at the Mercy Convent School.

Fit for Life Resumes

Galway City Harriers Fit4Life running programme began on Monday, and continues every Monday and Thursday.

This running-based programme was established eight years ago aimed at getting people physically active. Organised by Bernie Kelly and her team of leaders, the programme has trained thousands of beginners.

The meeting point is 7pm at Westside Library, all ages from 18 years upwards are welcome.

The registration fee is €40 from now to December 2016, and all sessions are led by trained volunteer leaders under Athletics Ireland and local club Galway City Harriers. See www.galwaycityharriers.com also for details.

Cross Country International

Damien O'Boyle of Craughwell AC competed on the Irish Junior Development Team which contested the Celtic International Cross Country in Edinburgh at the weekend. O'Boyle placed a fine 29th overall in a field stacked with much of Europe’s top cross country talent. His selection came on the back of a strong performance in the National Junior Cross Country before Christmas where he placed 11th, and also after running several 15 minute 5k races last autumn.

National Short Course

Last weekend's opening cross country race of the season, the relaunched National Short course championship due to be held in ALSAA sports grounds near Dublin airport, was postponed due to dangerous course conditions and will be reaffixed.
