A FEAST of music and song to celebrate Santa Lucia Day, from Coole Music's Coole Harmonies Choir and Sonic Strings, mezzo-soprano Clare Quinn, and the ConTempo Quartet, takes place this weekend.
The concert takes place in St Nicholas Collegiate Church this Sunday at 6pm and will feature Christmas carols and a performance of Corelli's Christmas Concerto. It is also the final concert in the Gort based Coole Music's 10 Year Anniversary Concert Series for 2015.
St Lucia's Day has been celebrated in Sweden since the late 1700s and is about bringing light into the darkest time of year. St Lucia, dressed in white with a crown of candles on her head, is followed by a choir of star children carrying candles, singing the famous Neapolitan song of St Lucia while walking in procession into the church. The Coole Harmonies Choir, have adapted the tradition since 2006 and perform it every year in different churches in Galway and Kilkenny.
Admission is free, but donations at the door are encouraged and will go to COPE Galway. See also www.coole-music.com
