FROM THE ghost stories of Sheridan Le Fanu and Henry James to HP Lovecraft's tales of cosmic horror, there is nothing more enjoyable than a story that sends a shiver of fear through you.
And as people sit reading these tales of horror, many must have thought, 'I'd love to try and write something like that', and now the good news is that you can, as the Galway based Scottish writer and storyteller Rab Fulton will give classes in how to write tales of terror.
Over eight weeks, the workshops will examine myths, fairy tales, folklore, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror to show the techniques and tools needed to create tension, narrative drive, new worlds, and fantastical creatures and characters. Participants will also be set tasks to improve and deepen their creative writing skills.
As well as studying stories, the workshops include games and group work that will encourage constructive criticism, critical listening, and how to let the imagination run free. Workshop participants will also have a one-on-one session with Rab to discuss their writing. Rab runs the Celtic Tales storytelling sessions. His books include Transformation, a tale of terror set in Galway, while his short story The Face of God was published in the 2015 American anthology Dark Harvest. His latest work is a dark sci-fi blog novel Marcus Marcus and the Hurting Heart, which was commissioned by NUI Galway's Múscailt Arts Festival and can be read online.
