Milestone for Barna GAA

Barna GAA celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and has produced a booklet to mark the milestone of the formation of the football club.

Former GAA president Joe McDonagh, who has strong links with Barna GAA, will officially launch the booklet at 7pm in Donnelly’s of Barna on Sunday December, 13.

The full colour booklet is packed with more than 100 pages of photographs and articles documenting and celebrating the evolvement of the club since 1965.

Among the collection of articles in the booklet are riveting personal accounts from Joe McDonagh and John Connolly about their memories of and connection with the club. There are also interesting interviews with well known Barna GAA men, former Galway football manager and player, Bosco McDermott, who was a part of the famous three-in-a-row All-Ireland winning team; and Seán Conlon, a former inter-county player and current selector to Kevin Walsh on the Galway senior football team. The booklet is also jam-packed with old photographs and newspaper cuttings of match reports from memorable wins for the club, which will bring readers down memory lane.

It is not a definitive history of the club but the booklet does document the early years of Barna GAA, from its formation in 1965 right through the decade where key events and milestones such as when the club went senior in the late 1990s are recorded.

Barna GAA ladies' section and the club’s juvenile section are thriving in 2015 and the booklet reflects the growth of both sections since they were formed; while the Gaeltacht club’s association with the Irish language and Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta is also documented in an article written ‘as Gaeilge’. The booklet was produced by a sub-committee of Barna GAA, which was chaired by juvenile chairman, Tommy Lenihan. The booklet will be of interest to anyone who has an interest in sport, Gaelic football and Barna GAA in particular and is the ideal stocking-filler for Christmas.

The club invites members of Barna GAA, past and present, including players and their parents, as well as non-members who live in the parish and who have an interest in Gaelic football and Barna GAA, to attend the launch. It will be on sale at the launch night on Sunday December 13, as well as various outlets in the village.
