Handel's Messiah in St Nicholas'

IRELAND CAN never get enough of Handel's Messiah, not surprising since this classic work was debuted in this country in 1742, and Galway is in for a performance of this masterpiece next week.

The Irish Baroque Orchestra, and the Resurgam Choir will perform Handel's Messiah in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Saturday December 12 at 6.30pm. The director will be Mark Duley, founder-director of St Nicholas Schola Cantorum, and the soloists will be soprano Róisín O’Grady, countertenor Roderick Morris, tenor Peter Davoren, and baritone Brendan Collins, a former winner of the Pro Musica Singer of the Year Award from the Cork School of Music.

There will also be a chance to find out about this great work at a public talk with historian Jonathan Bardon in at St Patrick’s National School, Lombard Street, at 2pm, also on December 12. Mr Bardon is the author of the recently published book Halleujah - The story of a musical genius and the city that brought his masterpiece to life. He will speak about the premiere of Messiah in Dublin in 1742.
