Helping employers cope with the economic downturn

The speed at which Irish businesses have found themselves struggling to survive has been quite breathtaking. Many employers are faced with very difficult decisions and nowhere more difficult than in relation to their employees.

Short-time working and redundancies are the reality of the economic downturn engulfing employers, a situation many have never experienced before.

Before making these difficult decisions employers need to know they are in full compliance with the current employment legislation. If they are in any doubt as to their compliance, they must ask themselves

- Can they afford to pay up to two years salary as compensation?

- Can they afford to lose out on the State’s 60 per cent rebate on redundancy?

- Do they want to spend unnecessary time and money fighting cases against employees in the courts system?

With many questions like these in mind, Deirdre McHugh BL, employment law expert and GMIT law lecturer will provide employers with a clear interpretation of the law and what they need to do before making the hard decisions. Ms McHugh has been working with employers for more than 15 years and is keenly aware and sympathetic to the pressures they work under. The aim of the workshop is to help employers understand how they can stay within the law on areas such as selecting staff for short term working, introducing lay offs, and selecting staff for redundancy. This will be an interactive workshop where all will have an opportunity to learn.

Attendance at this seminar may qualify for seven hours/points for members of the various professional bodies – the Incorporated Law Society, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA ), Accounting Technicians in Ireland, Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland, Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD ).

This full day employment law workshop will be taking place on March 5 in the Clayton Hotel, Ballybrit, Galway. For all bookings contact 087-3148123 or email [email protected]. Places are strictly limited and early booking is advised.
